INNOVATION

Extending the use and scope of satellites

Eutelsat has built its success on the reliability and flexibility of its in-orbit resource, a quest for technical excellence and an ongoing commitment to broadening the scope of satellite communications applications. These strengths place us in a unique position in the satellite sector, allowing us to identify future trends and demands, and to anticipate appropriate solutions.

Partnering leading industry players

Our innovative force makes us a privileged partner for leading industry players who seek to develop broadcasting and terminal equipment standards. As a founding member of the DVB consortium, Eutelsat played a key role in the specification of the DVB-IP and DVB-MHP standards for the development of multimedia content distribution direct to PCs.

Eutelsat also actively contributes to the standardisation of broadband access networks for air, rail and maritime transport alongside Alcatel, within the framework of the Mowgly project. Also in this segment, Eutelsat was closely involved in the ground-breaking launch by Connexion By Boeing of the first in-flight Internet access service on commercial flights over the North Atlantic.

Driving down size and cost of terminals

In parallel, Eutelsat has pursued a policy of investment in on-ground infrastructure and satellite payloads optimised for reducing size and cost of user terminals, and offering efficient utilisation of bandwidth. By associating its SKYPLEX on-board multiplexing system with a Ka-band payload on HOT BIRD™ 6, Eutelsat launched Skyplex Data, Europe's first service for interconnecting small two-way terminals in meshed mode.

Expanding satellite-based application

Hosting value-added services on multimedia platforms is another area in which Eutelsat is extending the use of satellites to new applications and new clients. Both at the Rambouillet (France) teleport, acquired from France Telecom, and in Turin (Italy), satellite-delivered turnkey broadband data distribution and multiplexing solutions are offered by service integrators, and directly connected to the Internet backbone by fibre.

The highest levels of expertise in satellite in-orbit control and operations

With worldwide recognition for the experience of its engineers and the quality of its facilities, Eutelsat also offers a complete range of in-orbit operating services, ranging from post-launch manoeuvres to deorbiting. Also used for Eutelsat's own fleet management purposes, these services are made available to national or regional satellite operators with smaller fleets for whom it is economically and technically more efficient to outsource positioning and control operations
